Jojo's POV
Jojo's POV

another sch assignment- to rewrite a given story in the POV of another character in it.

1. INT CHEONGs FUNCTION CENTRE NIGHT

FADE-IN:

A small dance club crowded with people, dancing and mingling around. A band of musicians with white shirts and matching checkered ties are playing a samba song on a brightly-lit stage. The gyrating revellers are dressed in fashionable wear of 1950s Singapore. For the men, tight shirts with baggy pants, hair slicked back with brylcream. For the women, its knee-length blouses and large hairbands.

INTERCUT WITH:

2. INT/EXT BACKSTAGE/STAGE NIGHT

A little girl, about 6 years old, face made up like a little doll and dressed in a shining frilly costume, peeks out of the thick velvet curtain at the side of the stage. Her name is JOJO.

POV of JOJO:

The adults are dancing happily on the dance floor, clicking their heels and swirling around each other. A couple stands out from the crowd, with their casual yet flamboyant moves. The slim and tan man in stylish clothes leads his lady into the pulsing beats and rythmn of the samba. She laughs as she spins into his strong arms. They danced and moved near where JOJO is standing. The lady smiles at JOJO and tilts her head in a shooing-kind of motion.

LADY

(whispers) Josephine, go back!

Then the man spins her again and they dance away. The lady turns around and looks at JOJO, making the same gesture again. JOJO shakes her head and stares silently.

Another girl, about the same age as JOJO, and dressed in the same costume, comes up to JOJO from behind. Her name is MIMI. They appear to be performers in the same item but MIMIs face has not been made-up yet.

MIMI

My mother can sing very well.

JOJO looks at the lithe lady swaying and singing on stage. She nods her head and continues to stare at the crowd.

She sees people clinking glasses and laughing loudly at the tables; a few women in polka-dot dresses staring at the dancing couple and following their movements; the fat guy playing the trumpet puffing his cheeks; and then a dejected-looking man sitting in a corner of the dance club pouring himself drinks again and again from a Remy Martell bottle.

JOJO

Your dad drinks well too.

MIMI seethes. Before she could say anything, someone from backstage calls her.

BACKSTAGE VOICE

(loud whisper)

Mimi! Come back here! Your make-up.

MIMI huffs and turns and stomps away.

JOJO continues to stand and stare at the dancers, mesmerized by their cheery faces and graceful yet strangely-violent dance.

FADE-OUT.
